When John Math Hafner was born on April 20, 1892, in Mooreton, North Dakota, his father, Adolph, was 39 and his mother, Helena, was 30. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Corporal in Company H, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on July 20, 1918 (at the age of 26) in France and is now buried in Calvary Cemetery, Wahpeton, Richland County, North Dakota, USA. His name's middle initial is inscribed on the Buzancy monument as N.
