Inside the town hall. Commemorative Object The memorial consists of a framed black and white photograph of Charles Dashiell Harris, a captain for the 6th Engineers, and his framed honorary diploma, which made him an honorary citizen of the town of Cléry-le-Grand. Both are are hanging on the wall right next to each other.
CPT Charles Dashiell Harris, a company commander in the 6th Engineers from March 21 to October 20, 1918, was mortally wounded while clearing a German machine gun nest in the Clair Chênes Woods, near Cléry-le-Grand. CPT Harris was taken captive by the Germans; he died from his wounds soon after on October 20, 1918.

Ont décidé à l'unanimité de commémorer le 75éme
Anniversaire de cet acte de bravoure avec toute la dignité
qu'il mérite et perpétuer le souvenir du sacrifice du Capitaine
Charles, Dashiell Harris qui se voit décernes le titre de ,
Citezen d'Honneur
de la commune de Cléry-le-Grand

La population de Cléry-le-Grand témoigné ainsi
de la vitalité des liens d'estime et d'amitié que les événements
douloureux de son histoire ont tissé entre le peuple Américain
et la peuple Francais.
Cette inscription est destinée à conserver dans notre
mémoire reconnaissante le nom du Capitaine Charles,
Dashiell Harris et ceux de ses camarades de l'armée des
Etats-Unis qui, luttant pour notre liberté, sont morts
héroiquement au combat.
Fait à Cléry-le-Grand, le vingt trois Octobre mil
neuf cent quatre vingt treize, en deux exemplaires, l'un rédigé

Charles Dashiell Harris, American engineering officer,
gave his life and neutralized an enemy position on the
heights of Clery-le-Grand, in a place called "Les Chenes Clairs"
It has been decided unanimously to commemorate the 75th
Anniversary of this act of bravery with the dignity
it deserves and the remembrance of the sacrifice of Captain
Charles Dashiell Harris who is awarded the title,

painful historical events are intertwined with the American people

United States Army who, fighting for our freedom, died
heroically in battle.
