17th Airborne Division Glider Memorial

Details:

The memorial is located in the northern side of the Peace Garden which can be accessed near the southern, main entrance to the park. Monument The memorial consists of a red metal plaque with white embossed lettering in English. It is framed by a red brick base and features unit insignia and names of 31 American soldiers of the 194^th Glider Infantry Regiment and 2 pilots of the 88^th Troop Carrier Squadron killed on site when a Horsa glider crashed on 12 December 1944. The memorial was inaugurated by the 17^th Airborne Division Association on 12 December 1994 in honor of the 50^th anniversary of the crash.

17^th Airborne Division

1943 - 1945

In memory of the 31 patriotic American glidertroopers of the 194^th Glider Infantry Regiment and two glider pilots of the 88^th Troop Carrier Squadron who lost their lives in a tragic glider crash at Greenham Common December 12^th 1944. Dedicated by the 117^th Airborne Division Association December 12^th 1944.
