Site of First WWII American Cemetery in France
Details:
The south side of the marker faces the beach and is surrounded by fencing and hedges on all but that side. It is positioned at the bottom of a slope, but it can be accessed by the short stairway which connects the marker to the roadway. Marker The natural gray brick marker features a two white board with black lettering in English and French on its south face. It was placed to note the site's significance as the location of the first American cemetery in France during WWII. While the cemetery was later moved, the marker still recognizes the site as well as several military units involved in the D-Day landing at Utah Beach. It specifically lists the 1st Infantry Division, 29th Infantry Division, 5th Engineer Special Brigade, and 6th Engineer Special Brigade on a small white board beneath the larger one. The marker has some small patches of moss growing on it and rests on a cement foundation.
