George Washington Statue -Budapest
Details:
Near the lake, on the south east side. Statue
In 1902, to honor the "Father of Hungarian Democracy," a movement began to build a Louis Kossuth statue in Cleveland. Some 60,000 people attended the unveiling, but there were no representatives from Hungary. As a sign of unity between the nations, Hungarian-American leaders conceived an idea to place a statue of George Washington in Budapest, the "Father of American Democracy."
In 1906, several hundred Hungarian-Americans and over 30,000 Hungarians attended the unveiling of the statue on September 16th led by American Hungarian Federation's first President, Kohányi Tihamér. September 16th became known as George Washington Day in Hungary. A wreath-laying ceremony is organized every year to thank the United States for the help given to Hungarians, especially the immigrants.
