Shrapnel Cross- Battle of the Hurtgen Forest

A cross made of shrapnel on a granite base with a plastic plaque.

The last cross put up in the Hurtgen Forest, set up by the residents of Vossenack in the summer of 2005 and consecrated on November 2, 2005.  It is completely made out of grenade scales and honors the soldiers of the 112th U.S. Infantry Regiment of the 28th Infantry Division who on November 3, 1944 started from here and on through the valley of the Kall River in their fatal and unsuccessful attack of Kommerscheidt and Schmidt.

de Ausgangspunkt

fuer den Angriff des III./ und I./ Bataillons des 112. (US) Inf.Regt.

verstaerkt durch die A Kompanie 707 Panzerbataillons

durch das Tal der Kall auf Schmidt.

 

 

 

In Memory of the Casualties

 

At this point, on November 3., 1944, started the attack

of III./ and I./ 112 US Infantry Regegiment, reinforced by

A Comp. 707., Tank-Battalion

via the Kall Trail into the objective Schmidt
