American Servicemen Monument
Details:
On the west side of the road.
MonumentThe monument comprises an angular stone base holding a bronze plaque. The current memorial was unveiled in 1972 and marks the approximate location of the temporary cemetery of the 82nd Airborne Division established on 20 September 1944, although British forces also buried their dead nearby.
The monument was erected in memory of over 637 soldiers and airmen of the United States and the British Armed Forces who died in the area during Operation MARKET GARDEN and follow-on operations in the autumn and winter of 1944. More than five hundred of them were from the 82nd Airborne Division. In May 1948, the cemetery was closed down after a number of the fallen were transferred to the United States at the request of their relatives. The others were given a final resting place at the American cemetery in Margraten.
