The memorial rememberbers the Marine Corps landing here in August 1942 as part of the Guadalcanal campiagn.

Background:

On August 7, 1942 at 8:00am, two battalions of the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) including the 1st Raider Battalion under Lieutenant Colonel Merritt A. Edson (Edson's Raiders) and the 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines (2/5) made an unopposed landing on "Blue Beach" on the western shore of Tulagi Island. Not a single landing craft of the first wave was able to set its passengers directly ashore. All of them hung up on coral at distances from 30 to well over 100 yards from the beach line, and the assault personnel waded ashore against no opposition, through water initially from waist to armpit deep, and immediately occupied the high ground of the ridges.

BLUE BEACH LANDINGS

TULAGI ISLAND

On August 7, 1942 two battalions, the 1st Raider Battalion under Lieteant Colonel Merrit Edson and 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines landed here unopposed.

The Maries fought towrds the southeast side of the island and by August 9th, 1942 and they had wiped out any form of resistance from Japanese forces that occupied the island since May 1942.

During the battle for the Tulagi 307 Japanese  and 45 soldiers lost their lives and 3 were taken prisoner.
