<< Back to Mittersheim

Details:

On the roadside across from the town War Memorial.

Monument

A sign post with the symbol of the 37th Tank Battalion and of the town of Mittersheim.  A plaque is attached to the front providing the background to the situation in Mittersheim in November 1944 along with an iconic photo of a tanker of the 37th Tank Battalion.

The memorial remembers the 37th Tank Battalion which was heavily engaged during the Lorraine Campaign in this area. The 37th Tank Battalion was commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Creighton W. Abrams Jr. during the war and liberated Mittersheim in November 1944.  The memorial also remembers the tank commander, Sergeant John Parks who served in the 37th and was killed during the Battle of the Bulge in Luxembourg in December 1944.
