The monument commemorates the 500 concentration camp prisoners of the Neufahrn subcamp, which was built as a subcamp of the Dachau concentration camp in the spring of 1945. The prisoners were to build an airfield in the Garching Heath, but were arrested on the 29th. April 1945 liberated by the Americans. The simple concrete memorial was consecrated in April 2017 and symbolizes the "prisoner's angle" that the CP prisoners had to wear on their clothes.

On April 10, the SS sent 300 of the prisoners on a death march to the east. On April 30, 1945, an unknown number of survivors were rescued by an unidentified American unit at Hallbergmoos, 5.5 miles/9 kilometers east of Neufahrn. Mortality on death marches was up to 50%. The rescue may have been units of the 45th Infantry Division.

On the morning of April 29, 1945, among the units of the 45th Infantry Division that liberated the remaining 500 Neufahrn subcamp prisoners were the 179th Infantry Regiment, the 160th and 189th Field Artillery Battalions, and  A Troop, 121st Squadron, 106th Cavalry Group (
