An inscribed metal plaque attached to a rockface.

The memorial remembers the crew of B-24 (44-41011), 'Fast Number' of the 782nd Bomber Squadron, 465th Bomber Group, 15th Air Force that was shot down here on August 3, 1944. Five of the crew were KIA, the rest were taken as POWs.   This B-24 was one of eight shot down that day over the skies of Tyrol, Austria. Thirty crewmen were KIA and the rest taken POW of the eight crews.

On 3 Aug. 1944, 2nd Lt. Myron R. Dodd and his crew took off from their base at Pantanella Airfield, Cerignola, Italy to join their forma- tion on a combat mission to bomb the Steel Plant at Friedrichshafen,
Germany. On the return flight from the target, the formation was attacked by enemy fighters. Lt. Dodd's aircraft was hit by 20mm fire from a Messerschmitt BF 109 G-6 fighter flown by an unknown pilot of JG 3. His navigator bailed out, then the plane exploded in mid-air, blowing the pilot, co-pilot and engineer out of it. All four (4) men were captured
and became POWs. Five (5) men were killed.

On August 3, 1944 planes of the 15th US Air Force were returning from a bombing mission to Friedrichshafen when engaged in heavy combat over the Tyrol with eight B-24 bombers being shot down in the area.

Am 3. August 1944 wurden acht schwere Bomber der 15.
US-Luftwaffe, gestartet von der Airbase Pantanella, Süditalien, von Jägern der Deutschen Luftwaffe im Gebiet über dem Fernpaß abgeschossen. Einer dieser Bomber, ein
B-24 Liberator von der 465 Bombergruppe/782 Staffel zerschellte an der Westwand des Wampeter Schrofen" Von den insgesamt 79 Besatzungsmitgliedern dieser acht
US-Flugzeuge haben 30 junge Männer an diesem Tag ihr
Leben verloren.

IN COMMEMORATION
August 3d 1944 eight B-24 Liberator Heavy Bombers of the 15th USAAF, based at Pantanella in southern Italy, were shot down by fighters of the German Air Force over the area of the Fernpaß, one of which crashed on the rocky cliffs of the "Wampeter Schrofen". This B-24 was from the 465 Bomber Group, 782 Bomber Squadron. From these eight aircraft, crewed by 79 airmen, 30 lost their lives on this day,
