Marker

A beautiful granite monolithic monument erected in 2005 to commemorate the crew of Eighth Air Force,
306th Bomb Group (Heavy), 369th Bomber Squadron, Aircraft B17G (Flying Fortress) # 4297185 which crashed at 
the monument site near Hridelec, Czechoslovakia (now Czech Republic) on 14 Feb 1945.

The B-17 was on a mission to Dresden, Germany. All the crew became POWs except fot the Ball Turret Gunner, SGT Alfred Stanley Lubojacky, a Czech-American, who was believed to be buried in a nearby village but is still listed as missing in action and is rememberd on the Epinal American Cemetery and Memorial on the Tablets of the Missing.

Sgt. Frank L. McDonough, waist gunner

The text on the monument is in Czech and reads:

Vnováno tm, kteí se nevrátili a také tm, kteí je dodnes postrádají.

Na památku lenm posádky bombardéru B-17G #42-97185 od 306.BG a 369.BS 8.USAAF, kteí se 14. února 1945 z mise na Dráany zachránili na padácích ped zánikem jejich letadla, jeho trosky dopadly v okolí obce Hídelec.

Posádku tvoili:

In memory of the crew members of the B-17G bomber #42-97185 from the 306th BG and 369th BS 8th USAAF, who on February 14, 1945, parachuted from a mission to Dresden before their plane crashed, the wreckage of which fell near the village of Hídelec.
