Allied Airmen Sacrifice Aircraft Sculpture Zuiderzee

Details:

The sculpture lies in the water about 50 feet from the shore; the monument portion of the sculpture is on the lake bank adjacent to the walkway.

Statue

A 4 meter tall sculpute of an aircraft crashing into the water and a small brick monument with an inscribed plaque attached to the top.

The four-meter-high monument portrays an airplane that crashes into the Veluwemeer. The monument is an initiative of the Foundation Allied Monuments Harderwijk. A plaque reads 'Between 1941 and 1945, a total of 117 crew members of Allied aircraft lost their lives in or near Harderwijk, mostly in the Ijsselmeer - Design: Arend Kleinpaste' unveiled April 18, 2012. 

The memorial remembers the 165 Allied Airmen killed in action, who lie buried on Oostergaarde, Harderwijk, between 10th March 1941 and 7th March 1945, or who were recovered from the water of the IJsselmeer (Zuiderzee) or from the nearby land. The list of 165 also includes many still missing in action. Many men are still missing in action; they were also mentioned on this list, though the list is still not complete. The airmen came from Canada, Norway, New Zealand, South Africa, the UK, and the USA. Some of the UK airmen were Americnas servicing with those UK forces.

In total, 143 persons, of whom:

45 buried in Oostergaarde, including 3 unknown.
30 exhumed and reburied in the American Cemeteries in Europe in Margraten and Ardennes, or buried in the USA and Norway.
32 missing in action.
36 buried in cemeteries around the IJsselmeer

Also, the 22 airmen who became prisoner of war are remembered as well as  they too are considered as victims.
