B-17 (44-8004) Crash Site Marker -97th Bomber Group

A few yards into the woodline from the field.
MarkerA concrete block with the outline of an airplane formed into the top; an inscribed brass plaque lists the crew. An information sign stands next to the monument.
The memorial remembers two crew members of B-17 (44-8004) of the 414th Bomber Squadron, 97th Bomber Group, 15th Air Force who were killed after the plane crashed landed on October 14, 1944.
B-17 (44-8004) piloted by 1st Lt. Victor J. Bieniek was part of a mission to from Amendola Airfield, Italy to Blechhammer Oil Refinery (in what is now Blachownia lska, Poland). After the mission the B-17 ran out of fuel and made a crash landing in an open field near the village of Prusinky; two of the crew (1LTs Raymond Winters & James Johnson) were killed during capture and the others became POWs.
