The memorial remembers two crew members of B-17 (44-8004) of the 414th Bomber Squadron, 97th Bomber Group, 15th Air Force who were killed after the plane crashed landed on October 14, 1944.
B-17 (44-8004) piloted by 1st Lt. Victor J. Bieniek was part of a mission to from Amendola Airfield, Italy to Blechhammer Oil Refinery (in what is now Blachownia lska, Poland). After the mission the B-17 ran out of fuel and made a crash landing in an open field near the village of Pruinsky; two of the crew were killed during capture and the others became POWs.
