B-24 (42-40105) ''Yankee Doodle Dandy'' Airmen Plaque
Details:
Mounted on the wall, located inside the cemetery.
PlaqueA rectangular ceramic memorial plaque affixed to a wall, featuring engraved black lettering. It displays the unit information and crew names of the B-24 Yankee Doodle Dandy (serial no. 42-40105), who were killed in action on November 11, 1943.
On November 11, 1943, the B-24D Liberator Yankee Doodle Dandy took off from Libya for a bombing mission in France but was unable to attack due to complete cloud cover and became separated from its formation. While returning, the aircraft suffered a mechanical issue and was then attacked by enemy fighters, forcing it to crash near Andonno, Italy. Four crewmen were killed and buried locally, one was captured, and the remaining survivors escaped with help from Italian partisans and the French Resistance, eventually rejoining Allied forces.
