Monument

A bronze bust of General James M. Gavin, depicted in his U.S. Army combat uniform with a steel helmet, who parachuted into the nearby area on June 6, 1944, is mounted on a tall rectangular stone pedestal. The monument was inaugurated on June 5, 2024.

On June 6, 1944, General James M. Gavin and elements of the 82nd Airborne Division parachuted into Normandy, aiming to secure areas north of Amfreville near the Merderet River to block German reinforcements and protect the beach landings. Despite scattered drops and difficult conditions, airborne troops regrouped, engaged German forces around Amfreville, and successfully disrupted enemy movements, contributing to the overall success of the D-Day invasion.
