<< Back to Conington Airfield

Details:

On the hangars main outward-facing wall.

Commemorative Object

A large black-and-white mural painted on the corrugated metal wall of the hangar commemorates the crew of B-17 #44-8557, which was shot down on Mission 234 over Freising, Germany, on April 18, 1945. The surviving crew members parachuted to safety, were taken prisoner, and were liberated ten days later. The artwork also honors the 457th Bombardment Group as a whole, whose airmen suffered 729 killed, missing, or captured during their 14 months of combat from February 1944 to April 1945. The mural was commissioned by Flying Club Conington owner Julie Churchill and painted by local artist Nathan Murdock for a dedication ceremony held on August 19, 2021.
