MonumentA black granite memorial composed of three upright stone panels of varying heights mounted on a rectangular stone base, dedicated to Allied airmen who lost their lives in Iceland during World War II. The central panel bears inscriptions in both Icelandic and English, honoring the Allied servicemen who died while serving in Iceland during the war. The right panel commemorates the units that operated from Iceland between 1941 and 1944 as part of the Allied defense of the North Atlantic during World War II. It features the emblems and lists the squadrons of the U.S. Navy (USN), U.S. Army Air Forces (USAAF), and U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) that were stationed in or deployed to Iceland to conduct anti-submarine patrols, convoy protection, and air defense missions against German U-boats and aircraft.
