12th Armored 'Hellcats' Armored Division Monument
Details:
On the right side of the town hall.
MonumentA cut redstone with an inscribed plaque attached to the front.
The memorial rememberes the 12th Armored Division - "The Hellcats" that fought here during enemy offensive, "Operation Norwind" in January and February 1945. The division was commanded by Major General Roderick R. Allen who is quoted on the memorial.
Monument Text:
The inscription on the plaque is written in French and English. The plaque also includes photos and the unit insignias of all the 12th Armored Divsion subordinate units. The English inscription reads:
The HELLCATS
IN MEMORY
of the soldiers who bravely faced the enemy who had established a solid bridgehead during Operation Nordwind, in January 1945.
This armored division paid a heavy price
During the hard and violent fighting. he commitment and selflessness of these men successfully allowed th division to stop the enemy advance.
All the sacrifice and bloodshed,
made HERRLISHEIM a sacred Place in
American hearts.
