John King Memorial - Medal of Honor, Philippine-American War

Monument

A life-sized bronze statue of John King, sculpted by local artist Rick Lewis, portrays him wearing one of his Medals of Honor while holding the second in his hand, a tribute to his exceptional courage as one of only nineteen men in U.S. history to receive the decoration twice. Of the nineteen recipients, five were born in Ireland, while three others were of Irish-American descent. The statue stands on a square stone pedestal bearing a bronze plaque inscribed with his name and a commemorative dedication. It was erected in 2013 after a multi-year community fundraising effort, led in large part by a resident who had known King in childhood and once scrambled for the coins he would toss to local children. The three-ton base, reinforced with rebar extending to the statue's midsection, ensures the monument's permanence and security. Today, the statue remains a lasting tribute in Ballinrobe, frequently featured in local Memorial Day commemorations, such as those shared by the Maggie McGuinness Pub.
