Monument
A stone memorial with a rectangular plaque honoring the crew and passengers of B-17G 43-38847, which crashed at this site on November 25, 1944. The plaque displays the names, ranks, positions, and units of the fallen personnel and is written in English.
On the afternoon of November 25, 1944, at approximately 15:20, a Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress, serial number 43-38847, crashed into Titterstone Clee Hill near Ludlow, Shropshire. The aircraft, assigned to the 40th Air Depot Group of the U.S. Army Air Forces, had taken off from Stansted Mountfitchet and was en route to Langford Lodge in Northern Ireland, with a scheduled overflight of Burtonwood. Aboard were three crew members and three passengers.
During the flight, the crew encountered poor weather conditions and became disoriented. In an attempt to determine their location, they descended below the overcast. A course correction led them off their intended path, and in zero visibility, the aircraft collided with Du Stone Quarry on Clee Hill. The impact resulted in the deaths of all on board, with Corporal Bean succumbing to his injuries en route to Ludlow Hospital.
