ISOB Charles L. Haswell - 100th Bomber Group

In the cemetery. Isolated Burial


A large oblique-like inscribed gravestone.

The Isolated Burial (ISOB) of Staff Sergeant Charles L. Haswell, who was KIA while on a mission serving as the Waist Gunner on B-17 (42-38191) of the 350th Bomber Squadron, 100th Bomber Group.  On May 19, 1944 the B-17 was shot down while on a  mission to Berlin.  The entire crew was KIA except for one taken POW. The body of SSG Haswell was retrieved from the Baltic Sea 12 kilometers west of Rødbyhavn on July 20, 2944.  This Danish town has maintained his grave since then.

2nd Lt. Lynn H. Barbour (Bombardier) was picked up by a fishing boat and eventually became a POW and was held first at Stalag Luft 3 Sagan Silesia. He survived the war.


Fellow crew member, Staff THOMAS HICK, is buried in a nearby Isolated Burial (ISOB). See site Sandby Church.

SSG Hawell was buried alongside two other Airmen from other units, Tech Sergeant Andrew Dyke (427th Bomber Squadron, 303rd Bomber Group) KIA In October 1943 and Staff Sergeant Melvin Callaway (366th Bomber Squadron, 305th Bomber Group) KIA in August 1944.  Both were repatriated to the US in 1948 and these are now a maintained as cenotaphs for these two airmen.  See this site for more on these two airmen.
