The plaque remembers the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division soldier, Staff Sergeant John Steele, who became famous after the Normandy Airborne operations when his parachute was caught on the steeple in Saint-Mère-l'Eglise, France. Staff Sergeant Steele spent time in this town after the Battle of the Bulge in 1945.
