Marker
A stone slab commemorating 2Lt Loustalot, a member of the commando unit who lost their lives during the Dieppe Raid (Operation Jubilee) on August 19, 1942. The monument is written in French.
The Dieppe Raid, or Operation Jubilee, occurred on August 19, 1942, as a large-scale Allied offensive involving over 6,000 troops from Britain, Canada, France, and the United States. The mission's primary goals were to gather intelligence and test German defenses along the northern coast of France.
Second Lieutenant Edward Vincent Loustalot, a U.S. Ranger attached to No. 3 Commando was the first American soldier to die on European soil during World War II. Loustalot and his team encountered intense German resistance upon landing at Berneval. Despite their efforts, they were unable to complete their mission, and many soldiers, including Loustalot, lost their lives in the battle.
