On August 30, 1944, during the liberation of France, T4 Blume and Pvt Connelly of the 37th Tank Battalion in the 4th Armored Division were killed in the vicinity of Chancenay. The 4th Armored Division, under the command of General George S. Patton's Third Army, played a pivotal role in driving back German forces as part of the Allied advance following the Normandy landings. As the division pushed through northeastern France, heavy fighting took place in the area around Chancenay, where Blume and Connelly lost their lives.
