Monument Text:
A stone block monument bearing a rectangular bronze plaque commemorating Pvt Delaney and PFC Durdan who were Killed in Action on August 22, 1944. The plaque is written in French. Note: According to our research, the monument has an error on the date and place of the death of the two soldiers. The men who were killed in Ballancourt belonged to Company C, 48th Armored Infantry Battalion: Pfc. John W. Singleton and Private Salvatore Grifo.
The Morning Reports for the 440th Armored Field Artillery Battalion were daily records documenting personnel changes, unit location at midnight, strength counts, and occasionally a "Record of Events" detailing the battery’s actions. These reports are the only surviving documents at the battery level and were the first to officially record the deaths of Pvt John F. Delaney and PFC Michael Durdan.
The report from August 27, 1944, confirmed that Delaney and Durdan were killed in action on August 23, 1944, west of Farcy, which is just north of Dammarie-les-Lys and southwest of Melun. On that day, the battalion was located near Farcy. After being hit by enemy counter-battery artillery fire, the battalion moved 3 miles west to a safer location, from which they could continue supporting the 7th Armored Division. The Morning Report precisely recorded their movement, noting the times of departure (1830) and arrival (1900).
