Monument
A stone monument crowned with an Indian headdress, reminiscent of the symbol of the 2nd ID; an Indian head, bearing a rectangular bronze plaque written in French and English. The monument is the work of the sculptor Xavier Gonzales, created as part of the sculpture symposium in Cerisy-la-Forêt, and was inaugurated on June 18, 2011.
SSgt John R. Simonetti has a monument in Saint-Germain-d'Elle to commemorate his sacrifice during World War II, particularly his role in the Battle of the Hedgerows in June 1944. He was killed on June 16, 1944, while engaged in combat against German forces, but his body was not discovered until 2009 when it was found near the village during excavation work.
Simonetti's remains were recovered close to the location where he died, making this spot significant in honoring his memory. The monument, erected in 2011, symbolizes the gratitude of the local community for the Allied soldiers who fought and died to liberate France. The memorial also highlights Simonetti's service in the 2nd Infantry Division, represented by an Indian headdress on the monument.
