Marker

A stele bearing a square white plaque honoring the eight American crewmen written in English (in the 1st column) and French (in the second column) with the flags of the United States of America and Belgium. The monument was erected in 2023 and was erected by the organization which was founded by Paul Delahaye. It was called the Belgo-Americain Foundation but after Paul died in 2013, the name was changed to Devoir de Mémoire de Momignies-Chimay.

On April 22, 1944, eight American airmen, who had been evading capture in Belgium, were betrayed and captured by German soldiers. The men were: TSgt. Orian G. Owens, TSgt. Charles A. Nichols, SSgt. John J. Gembrowski, 2Lt. George W. Eike, 2Lt. Robert J. Benninger, Sgt. John K. Pindroch, Sgt. Vincent J. Reese, and 2Lt. William H. Huish.

They were captured after a betrayal by local collaborators and were brought to this area where they were executed and buried in a mass grave. Their remains were later moved to the military cemetery at Margraten in the Netherlands. The Belgian authorities prosecuted some of the perpetrators after the war.
