Plaque
A rectangular black plaque commemorating Lt. Higinbotham and PFC Gemmill, of the 6th Armored 'Super Sixth' Division, who were killed during the liberation on August 5, 1944. The plaque is written in French in gold lettering.
On August 5, the 6th U.S. Armored Division entered Finistère via the village of Poullaouen, the first commune in Finistère liberated by the American army (by the 6th Armored Division commanded by General Grow) where a skirmish claimed the lives of 2 American soldiers, 2Lt Phillip E. Higinbotham and Pfc John D. Gemmill of the 25th Armored Engineer Battalion. They were killed while handing over important documents to the units of the division. They were the first two soldiers from the division to lose their lives in the department.
