Monument
A memorial formed in two columns, the black representing the night and the essential secrecy of resistance operations, the white the shining spirit which ultimately triumphed. The two columns are linked by the moon, which brought together the Special Operations Executive (SOE) and the Resistance in all forms of clandestine operations, but especially the landing or parachuting of agents and stores. Three floodlights at the base of the monument recall the L-shaped flare-path laid out by 'reception committees' to enable Lysander and Hudson to enable the aircraft of 161 Squadron, Royal Air Force to touch down by night on improvised landing strips. The monument symbolizes the clandestine nature of SOE and is called the ‘Spirt of Partnership’. The memorial was unveiled on May 6, 1991, marking the fiftieth anniversary of the despatch of F Section's first agent to France.
Special Operations Executive (SOE) was a British organization to include Americans, formed in 1940 to conduct espionage, sabotage, and reconnaissance in German-occupied Europe and to aid local resistance movements during World War II. During the night of 5 to 6 May 1941, George Begue, the first radio operator of the SOE, parachuted north-east of Vatan, Indre, France, in the domain of Abeaupinière, and made contact with Mr. Max Hymans in Valençay on 7 May. Max Hymans, MP for the constituency, had made himself available to the French Resistance in London. The Indre then became the hub of the SOE in France.
To the northwest side across the central island, there are 3 plaques bearing commemoration messages and the Valençay Memorial's Roll of Honour. The monument itself has no inscriptions.
