PFC Manuel O. Martinez Monument (1st Infantry Division)

Just off the road near the old fort structures. Monument


A small stone with an inscribed plaque attached to the front.

The memorial remembers PFC Manuel Otero Martinez who fought in both the Spanish Civil War and in World War 2.  He immigrated to New York and joined the US Army. During WW2 he served with the 16th Infantry Regiment, of the "Bid Red One"- 1st Infantry Division.  He was killed in action on Omaha Beach on D-Day, June 6, 1944.  He is considered the only Spaniard who was KIA in the Normandy landings.  

Memorials also remember him on Omaha Beach; he is buried in Outes, Spain. See sites Omaha Beach- 1st Infantry Division and Outes.
