The Spirit of Elbe Memorial Plaque
Details:
The memorial is adjacent to the Monument to Victims of Fascism ( also known as the Memorial “Tragedy of Peoples” ), near the northwest corner of the Museum of the Great Patriotic War (World War II museum, also known as the Victory Museum).
PlaqueThe monument includes a rectangular bronze plaque mounted on a simple granite base. The basrelief on an upper portion of the plaque shows three U.S. soldiers on the left meeting three Soviet soldiers on the right across bridge fragments. The lower part of the plaque includes inscriptions in Russian and English languages.
In 1995, the U.S. Department of Defense's 50th Anniversary of World War II Commemoration, the committee erected two plaques commemorating the linkup between U.S. and Soviet Forces at the Elbe River at the end of World War II.
This monument symbolizes the linkup at about 1600 hours on 25 April 1945, between Second Lieutenant William Robertson and Private First Class Frank Huff of the 273rd Infantry Regiment (69th Infantry Division. V Corps, First US Army) and Soviet Lieutenant Aleksandr Silvashko and Sergeant Nikolai Andreyev (58th Guards Rifle Division, 34th Russian Corps, 1st Ukrainian Front) on a damaged bridge over the Elbe River near Torgau, Germany.
However, the basrelief image is based on a staged photo taken by International News war correspondent Allan Jackson on 26 April 1945, the day following the actual link-up. This photo shows U.S. 69th Division soldiers who were in Torgau preparing for the formal meeting between Division Commander Major General Emil Reinhardt and the Soviet 58th Guards Division Commander General Major Vladimir Rusakov.
