Battle of Biak Museum and Japanese Cave
Details:
At the end of the roadway entering the jungle. Museum
The museum and Japanese cave remember the Battle of Biak.
The unit tasked with the capture of Biak was named Hurricane Task Force. The majority of this force was comprised of the 41st ‘Jungleer’ Infantry Division, minus its 163rd Infantry which was still engaged on Wadke Island. The 41st. was commanded by MG Horace H. Fuller, who also commanded the task force. General Robert L. Eichelberger assumed command of the Hurricane Task Force on 15 June 1944.
On May 27, 1944 the U.S. Army 41st Infantry Division "Jungleers" made an amphibious landing on the southern coast of Biak at Bosnik. A tank versus tank battle occurred on Biak, when Japanese Type 95 Ha Go tanks attempted to attack the beachhead. They were destroyed by M4 Sherman tanks.
Defending from natural limestone caves including Japanese Cave (Goa Jepang also known as Binsari Cave), the Japanese Army were able to attack American forces and delayed their use of Mokmer Drome (today Frans Kaisiepo Airport). Fighting continued until August 1944.
