Behind the town hall.

Monument

The memorial consists of a stylized dove of peace monument (in the center) that was inaugurated in 1982 and was completed in 1989, a rectangular stele on the left, and a rectangular plaque on the right which is inset to the wall. All texts inscribed are written in French.

IN MEMORIAM

 

ON AUGUST 26, 1944, THE AMERICAN-CANADIAN FIRST SPECIAL SERVICE FORCE

TOOK PART IN AN AUDACIOUS NIGHT ATTACK

DARING NIGHT ATTACK, AIDED BY THE COURAGEOUS

CITIZENS OF VILLENEUVE-LOUBET

AND LIBERATED THE TOWN FROM THE ENEMY.

 

AT THE END OF NOVEMBER, THE FORCE RETURNED TO VILLENEUVE-LOUBET FOR

FINAL PARADE BEFORE BEING

DISBANDED ON DECEMBER 5, 1944.

 

DURING THESE OPERATIONS TO LIBERATE

OF SOUTHERN FRANCE

66 SOLDIERS WERE KILLED, AND

MORE THAN 200 WERE WOUNDED.

 

IT IS TO THESE VALIANT SOLDIERS AND TO THE

COURAGEOUS CITIZENS OF VILLENEUVE-LOUBET

THAT THIS MEMORIAL IS DEDICATED.
