Monument Text:

Le premier américain tué dans le Mantois

Tom Treanor

Bréval, carrefour de la Scellée le 18 août 1944. La jeep des correspondants

de presse US a été écrasée par un char, accidentellement semble t-il ;

(photo Parker, Signal Corps-NARA,

Tom Treanor

Bréval, crossroads of La Scellée, August 18, 1944. The US press correspondents' jeep

was run over by a tank, apparently accidentally;

it was closely following General Patton's vehicle. This mystery

is revealed here for the first time. American or German tank?

Had Patton already been targeted? On board were war correspondents

Sonnee Gottlieb of the International New Service; Charles Shaw of the

Colombia Broadcasting Co. and Tom Treanor of Los Angeles Times.

The latter died of his wounds. Two of the journalists can be seen
