Liberation of Meximieux - American Soldiers Casualties Plaque
Details:
Affixed to the right-bottom side of the wall of the memorial.
Plaque
A white rectangular plaque inscribed with a commemoration message followed by the list of names of those who were killed during the liberation of the commune. The plaque is written in French in red lettering. 9 names are included on the plaque but several names are incorrectly spelled.
The battle of Meximieux was part of a chase initiated by the American and French troops who had landed in Provence on August 15, 1944, against the units making up the 19th German army, which had been ordered to withdraw to northeastern France on August 17. For the Allies, the aim was to put as many Wehrmacht divisions as possible out of action before they were reconstituted in the Vosges and Alsace, in order to prevent any attempt by the liberators to cross the Rhine.
The fighting during the Battle of Meximieux lasted from August 31 to September 2, 1944.
