A bronze relief and inscribed plaque.
The plaque remembers 1LT Virgil Kirkham of the 377th Bomber Squadron, 362nd Fighter Group of the 9th Air Force. LT Kirkham was Killed in Action, piloting P-47D Thunderbolt (44-89700) "Lady Jo-Ann II" on April 30, 1945, after striking trees while swerving to avoid flak during a strafing run on German armored vehicles near Domažlice, Czech. He is considered among the last airmen to be KIA in Europe in WW2.

A memorial in the forest west of the town, marks the plane crash site.
