Monument
A trapezoidal prism monument that is made of concrete, Marian slate, and a fragment of a propeller from 2Lt Allen's P-38 Lightning. On the face of the monument is a rectangular white plaque bearing a commemoration message while above the plaque is the insignia of the 15th U.S. Air Force. The monument was built to the efforts of the Aviation History Club at the Historical Museum of the Slovak National Museum in Bratislava with the support of the city council. It was unveiled on the exact day and hour of the 50th anniversary of the largest air battle over the territory of Slovakia during World War II.
On 26 June 1944, American airman 2Lt Ray Wallace Allen, a member of the 95th Squadron, 82nd Fighter Group, was supporting the bombers attacking military installations around Vienna. On the approach route, they were attacked by German fighters and his machine crashed near the Svätý Jur station railroad. The remains of R. W. Allen were buried in his native Girrard on 21 January 1995.
