1Lt Robert A. Booth Monument

<< Back to Le Val-d'Ajol

Details:

The stele is on the right after crossing an old stone bridge over "La Combeauté". It is highly visible.

Monument

A standing stone monument in the shape of a trapezoidal prism. The monument is inscribed in French and English in colored lettering. The insignia of the 9th Air Force is engraved and painted on the top of the monument while the photo etched on the monument is of 1Lt Booth’s.

1st Lt Booth's mission was to resupply his Infantry comrades who were surrounded by the enemy at Biffontaine (Vosges), the famous "Lost Battalion". That day, the 405th FS was the only unit available, and the pilot knew little about this mission, dubbed the "Green Flight", except that he was to drop supplies and provisions for the survival of this U.S. battalion.

The stele is not erected at the point of impact, which is in the forest.
