Monument
A small rectangular stele bearing a rectangular black plaque. The inscription is written in French. On June 7, 1944, Major Merritt commanded a group of five P-51 Mustang fighters, when he spotted a column of Jagdgeschwader 26 (fighter squadron) supply trucks, nicknamed Schlageter, stationed at Roiffé. His squadron strafed the convoy, causing heavy damage to the trucks. During this engagement, Major Merritt was hit by German machine gunners. He was found dead near his aircraft.
