B-24 (42-78213) Monument

<< Back to Oratory Garden

Details:

Inside the garden, near the entrance gate.

Monument

A tapering rough-hewn stone monument bearing a rectangular black plaque telling about the crash and listing the names of the airplane crew. On the bottom of the monument is another smaller plaque about the inauguration and the organizations involved in the project.

On May 27, 1944, B-24 #42-78213 "Miss I Hope" was shot down by German anti-aircraft fire during its mission to bomb the airfield of Montpellier. Six members died in the incident while the remaining four were able to parachute out of the crashing plane but later were taken as prisoners.

Correction made by Philippe Castellano in September 2017: The name "Ophelia Bump" on the plaque is an error that has spread over time, research affirms that the correct name is "Miss I Hope".
