Plaque

A pedestal on which a bronze plaque is mounted. The plaque contains a commemoration message, a brief history of the fate of 2Lt Herriges, as well as depictions of a P-47 Thunderbolt, a portrait of 2Lt Herriges, and the insignia of the U.S. 12th Air Force.

NORBERT W. HERRIGES

 

Inaugureé le 18 septembre 2021 en hommage au 2nd lieutenant Norbert W. HERRIGES

né le 03/12/1919 - Canada

 

Le 12 août 1944, a 19h20, au dessus de Pourriéres, un Thunderbolt P-47 du 552ème Escadron, 27ème groupe de chasse, de la 12ème Air Force provenant de la base de Serragia en Corse, est abattu par un chasseur allemand de l'oberfelwebel. L'avion s'ecrase dans la plaine, au sud du village. Le pilote, le Second Lieutenant Norbert W. HERRIGES, âge de 25 ans perd la vie dans sa chute. Ses obséques ont lieu le 14 août à Pourriéres en présence d'un trés grand nombre de personnes.

 

N'oublions jamais ceux qui ont donné leur vie pour notre liberté.

On August 12, 1944, at 7:20 pm, over Pourriéres, a Thunderbolt P-47 of the 552nd Squadron, 27th Fighter Group, of the 12th Air Force, coming from the Serragia base in Corsica, was shot down by a German Oberfelwebel fighter. The plane crashed on the plain south of the village. The pilot, Second Lieutenant Norbert W. HERRIGES, aged 25, lost his life in the crash. His funeral took place on August 14 in Pourriéres, in the presence of a very large number of people.

 

Let us never forget those who gave their lives for our freedom.
