Monument

A rough-hewn stone bearing a rectangular black plaque. The plaque contains the commemoration message as well as the names and roles of the crew members which are written in French and English in two columns. An etched depiction of their aircraft is printed on the bottom of the plaque. This monument commemorates the crash of the B-17 on September 3, 1943. Their airplane was shot down by German fighters during a bombing mission at the Romilly-sur-Seine aerodrome.

du Bombardier Américain « HI-LO JACK » abattu le 3 Septembre

1943 par la chasse allemande au-dessus de VILLEROY.

Membre d'équipage :

Ces dix hommes survécurent au crash et à la guerre. Sept d'entre

eux rejoignirent l'Angleterre avec l'aide de la Résistence Française.

Les trois autres ont été faits Prisonniers de Guerre et libérés en Mai

1945.

Higher, stronger, faster

This Memorial is dedicated to the memory of the crew of the

American bomber B 17 « HI-LO JACK » shot down on September,

3, 1943 by the German fighters over VILLEROY.

Crew members:

These men came out of the crash alive and survived the war. Seven

of them escaped with the help of the French Resistance and joined

England. The other three were made Prisoners of War.
