Battle of Bataan & Battle of Mount Samat Memorial Arch

<< Back to Orion

Details:

Over the General Vicente Lim Road about 250 meters west of the National Road.

Commemorative Object

A black steel archway over the road – about 15 feet tall, with white lettering and a WW1 "Doughboy" style helmet, at the top center of the arch. This style of helmet was worn by the US and Philippine forces in 1942 in the Philippines.

The memorial arch remembers the World War II Battle of Mount Samat which was part of the larger Battle of Bataan.

The road is named for Brigadier General Vicente Lim, a 1914 Philippine Graduate of West Point, who commanded the 41st Philippine Infantry Division that fought at the Battle of Mount Samat.  After Bataan, General Lim was part of the Bataan “Death March”; survived imprisonment; served in the Guerrilla forces and was executed by the enemy in 1944.  He is remembered in the Manila American Memorial and Cemetery Wall of the Missing.
