Vauthier Borne Marker– George Washington (#68)
Details:
Located on the east side of D904 about 1 kilometer from Flirey town center on the road edge.
The memorial is a carved pink granite stone borne about 1.5 meters high. The stone is shaped into a French Soldier with helmet; cross band; hand grenade and gas mask. A small inscription on this borne remembers and honors the first President of the United States, George Washington.
The carved stones or bornes, mark the World War 1 front line as it was on July 18, 1918 across France and Belgium. 118 bornes mark the front line: 96 in France and 22 in Belgium. The stones were the work of the French Great War soldier and artist Paul Moreau-Vauthier (1871-1936). The marker in Flirey is marker # 68.
