B-26 ‘Shady Lady’ (41-31682) Monument

<< Back to Gonneville-Le Theil Southern Outskirts

Details:

On the east side of the intersection.

Monument

A four-foot stone obelisk bearing a granite plaque listing the names of the crew. The inscription on the plaque is written in French in engraved and gold-leaf lettering.

On February 15, 1944, the aircraft was taking part in a mission against the La Glacerie V-1 site in France when it was shot down over the target by enemy flak. The aircraft came down near the village of Le Theil. It was observed to be on fire as it came down, and to bank, apparently to avoid a farm, before crashing into a line of trees. Only Sgts. Arthur and Dalrymple were able to bail out. Lt. Hunt was badly wounded and died of his injuries a few days later. The other three crew members died in the crash and were buried in the Cherbourg cemetery. Sgt. Arthur was captured; Sgt. Dalrymple evaded capture for a time but was eventually caught in Paris.
