B-17F 41-24491 ‘Man O War’ Memorial

<< Back to Saint-Andre-des-Eaux Town Hall

Details:

In the town hall square, in front of the town hall.

Marker

A rectangular stone plaque with a clear stand inscribed with a commemoration message and a list of the crew members, their role, and their status, written in French in engraved and gold lettering. The memorial was inaugurated on May 8, 2015.

On November 9, 1942, ‘Man O War’ crashed in the town at a place called Ranlieu, after being shot down by flak during an attack mission at St. Nazaire. Six crew members were killed in this incident. Four members were able to bail out before the crash but three of them were captured by the Germans and taken as prisoners. The remaining one was able to evade capture through the help of the French underground network.
