F-3A (43-21728) 'Sleepy Time Gal' Monument
Details:
On the east side of the road.
A rough-hewn, white, stone monument bearing a rectangular, black plaque containing a commemoration message and the names of the crew. The inscription is written in French in gold and engraved lettering. Above the commemoration plaque is the picture of the airplane below the badges of the US and French flags and the insignia of the 155th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron.
Sleepy Time Gal was one of the forty-six A-20 Havoc modified for photo reconnaissance. On September 5, 1944, the aircraft was flying in the direction of Paulnay/Azay-le-Ferron. It turned left just before Azay and was hit by flak while observing the German Elster column. It then lost a wing, shortly after Prung and crashed near the Moury pond, and all four American airmen lost their lives.
