In 1917, the Issoudun region became the largest aviation school in the world. And Lizeray hosted six of the thirteen camps. Two were located in the communes of Paudy, Saint-Valentin, Ménétréols-sous-Vatan, and one in the commune of La Champenoise. This flight school was called the Third Aviation Instruction Center (AIC). The main camp at Rouze included the headquarters, the hospital, the training buildings, the stores, the aeronautical supply warehouses, the repair workshops, the barracks capable of housing about 4,000 men, and an outdoor assembly and testing area. More than 8,000 people occupied the site including officers, troops, Chinese laborers, and German prisoners.
